My mom started this tradition–red hots in our applesauce on Valentine’s Day morning.

I’ve continued it.

Just like I’m sure that surprises her, I’m surprised that it means so much to my children.

After my grocery trip this weekend my daughter slipped into the pantry to “check something.”

“What were you looking for,” I asked.

“To see if you remembered,” K said.

“Remembered what?”

“The red hots,” she said. “And you did.”

How could I forget?

It’s the little things they remember the longest.
