The Game He Doesn’t Like To Play

by

Paul’s been away the last six weeks. He’s still here, brushing shoulders with us once or twice a day, but he’s not as available. Nearly every night is a white shirt night, fulfilling two big responsibilities at church simultaneously. I miss him. We miss him.

I admire my friend’s advice, “When dad was gone, we would eat things he didn’t like—macaroni and cheese and breakfast for dinner. We didn’t pick up all the time, and we didn’t go to bed with the same routine. We were a little more slack.”

We’re creating our own version of that on Thursday nights, his night away that is the longest and hardest for us. Simple meals. A movie, walk, bike ride or game we wouldn’t normally play. Mom and kid time.

Last Thursday we ate omelets and watched a movie. Last night we ate nachos, filled graham crackers and saltines with frosting and played Scrabble, a game he doesn’t like to play.

I remember many, many evenings like that as a child when my dad was Bishop. Hang in there! That particular trial is so worth it. You’ll receive so many blessings!

That is such a cute idea. I do something sort of similar when my husband is hitting finals week: I’ll rent a couple of chick flicks that he won’t want to watch to keep me occupied while he is studying. I can’t wait until Wes is old enough for game night!

We have been praying for him in your whole family, and the others with him. You will be blessed and we are grateful for the service that they all render.

Your strength and support to your husband is inspiring. (And Ritz crackers with frosting is the best :) !!)

Sounds familar- except my kids are still small enough that I can send them to bed early when dad is away
