Your Opinion: The Age for Trick or Treating

by TJ

Having Halloween on a Friday seems a wholly appropriate time for the holiday. Many school night trick-or-treating expeditions in the past have rang up too much sugar and excitement for my children to settle into bed without me resenting their fun. But, this year, I can relax and let them enjoy, since it will be one of their last times to trick or treat. Even though I regularly see teens at our door, I’m still going to set some limits. What about you?

When is a child too old to trick or treat?

I trick-or-treated until I was about 14. I felt a little ridiculous (especially since I was already 5′10″), but I wanted all the free candy! BUT, I think a teenager MUST dress up in a full costume, or it’s just not right.

I figure if they’re in a costume, hey deserve candy. I don’t really care when teens come to the door. I just DON’T let them take what they want (cause they get a little grabby). But, hey everyone can have fun (although I went once in college and felt pretty dumb!)

I agree about Halloween falling on a Friday this year–I wish it would every year. Well, I guess it’s up to the family and the attitude of the child. Maybe preteen age. We’ll cross that bridge later. :)

Dan thinks that if someone is wearing a costume, they can trick-or-treat, even if it’s an adult without kids, which we have seen. I think that’s going a little too far! Halloween can be for everyone, but I don’t think trick-or-treating should be. It’s for kids. I voted 14 or older is too old.

I say if they are dressed up they can have candy … or they can take their little brothers and sisters or nieces and nephews trick or treating and get candy that way :) !!

This post has been an exercise in me learning how to word things better. For the record in the neighborhood: We give out candy to anyone who comes to our door. The limits we place are on our own children and when they stop trick or treating.
