September Reading Challenge

by TJ

Try-It With-Me Tuesday, an interactive weekly time and place to foster connections that challenge and encourage the process to become a well-rounded person.

School is in session—for my children and for me. My preparation for the daily religion class I teach to high school students stretches me to learn the truths of the Bible. In our class this morning, we recognized how the story lines of a popular novel and a popular movie borrowed themes from the account of Christ’s birth. When I discover those allusions to literature, I appreciate the depth that forms our culture and the modern works become richer.

My high school AP English teacher, Terry Cannon, gave us a Lifetime Pursuit Reading List that “spans 2500 years of man’s literary creations in drama and fiction.” She said, “admittedly any list will be incomplete, but you can fill in the gaps as you so choose.”

Ever since, I’ve read from this list of hundreds of books, which even includes the Bible, to discover what she meant and develop my own cultural literacy. Back to school time makes me want to pull out the list and choose another. Do you want to try the September Reading Challenge with me?

Make a list of five to ten books for your lifetime pursuit reading list and begin reading one this month.

In addition to starting another book on my list, I might even enter the entire list into Good Reads. I’m hesitating, though. I would miss carrying the yellowing and folded 18-year-old four-page list with me to the library each week. Even if I don’t share all of the list on Good Reads, I’ll let you know at least ten of my favorites and review the one I’m reading. Be back on the last Tuesday of the month, September 30 to share my progress and see what’s on your list.

Join in by trying the challenges with me, commenting, linking, or suggesting a challenge. If you want to write a post on your blog about what happened when you took the challenge, I will publish your link. Just link to my website in your post and send me your link. Feel free to use the TIWMT image in your post.

For the popular book - think about Christ being from an immortal Father and a mortal mother. Still need more clues?

Joseph took Jesus Christ into Egypt as a child so that Herod wouldn’t kill him. Herod was worried that Christ would take over his rule as King. For the popular movie, think of Star Wards Episode Three. Luke and Leia are hidden from Emperor Palaptine so that he wouldn’t kill them since they were royals and make take his place.
