Sweeten Up
After reading about sugar overload at Women’s Health from a link on Evolving Mom and hearing about Minna’s Sugar Strike, I consciously watched and reduced my own sugar intake.
Before I go any further I must warn that the rest of this post, the poll, and the ensuing comments may not meet the standard of inspiring (in a good way) that I routinely seek in my posts.
But, today is Friday, and Friday is a dessert night in our house. I have an undeniable sweet tooth. I have learned to limit myself in different ways throughout my life, with varied results. Only after I left my parent’s home could they dedicate a whole drawer in the kitchen to all the varied flavors of Twizzlers.
In my own home, now, the inspired balance of eating some sugar but not too much, is still not easy, especially as a wife and a mother who gets cranky at 3 p.m. every afternoon and loves baking for her family.
However, setting particular days aside as dessert nights seems to help me and my family limit the indulgences (to at least three or four days a week instead of seven). Thus, I am contemplating Rice Krispies Treats or Warm Brownie Pudding Cake.

I like the idea of dessert night! That is similar to my “treat” of the week and it really does work. I had to choose ‘other’ on your poll because like you, I have a mega sweet tooth and of course, I couldn’t just pick one! Depending on the mood I’m in, a sweet craving might be satisfied with either ice cream, cookies, or an iced white mocha from Starbucks.
Indulgences are fun and even better when done in moderation. Thanks for your post and Happy Friday!
Oh, I forgot ice cream on the poll! See what happens when I write and edit myself. I will edit the poll to include ice cream. Anything else I should add?
I like to eat carrots.
You have “dessert nights”? We have seven of those each week, plus seven dessert breakfasts and dessert lunches, and sometimes dessert snacks too.
I think we may need some sugar reduction intervention. I’ll let you inspire me!
Sorry, I couldn’t choose just one. Ice cream is probably number one, but I also have an affinity for cupcakes lately (only really good ones that I make with filling inside!) And I’ll eat anything chocolate (preferably dark). KH, you’re crazy! You must not have any Jensen genes!
Don’t let kh’s comment fool you; She has all the family genes and is our biggest sugar lover, but she does like carrots cause they are sweet, like her!
Definitely chocolate, and especially the dark stuff. AK bought me a treat today with his own allowance because he has noticed that mom needs more treats and snacks when she is pregnant! He picked out a nerds rope for himself and I showed him what I wanted, Dark Chocolate Hershey’s kisses! And have you ever tried Lindt’s Dark chocolate truffles in the black wrappers? Heavenly!!! And ice cream is a weakness too. We too try to do one dessert night, it’s usually Monday night, Family Home Evening treats. But we sometimes end up using treats/desserts as motivation for the kids to finish their dinner. This only really happens if at least one finishes! The funny thing is even when there is a treat planned sometimes that still won’t even get RK to eat her dinner. Crazy huh?
I know I’m a little behind…but I wanted to add my favorite. As I have a blood sugar disorder, mine may not seem like a real dessert, but it does the trick for me, and may help others to substitute something healthy that is still sweet.
Artificially sweetened vanilla yogurt topped with blueberries, raspberries, and finely chopped walnuts.
I always have frozen berries on hand and eat them almost every day. Just thaw a 1/2 cup in a bowl for about 30-60 minutes. And, if they are too tart, add a little splenda. Yummy!
